Typically, large solar projects are purchased by investors who have an appetite for income tax credits and tax deductions. The investors range from building owners, banks and tax credit financiers. Here is a short list of ways we finance larger solar projects.

  1. Certified investors: We have investors in MN that can use the tax credits, so they buy the project, utilize generous legitimate income tax benefits that will help pay for the project quickly. Then, after a few years of pre-arranged harvesting of revenues/profit, the investors sell or donate the project back to the original owners or other entities and earn additional benefits. Contact someone at Winkelman Solar to get more information.
  2. PACE Financing: The St. Paul Port Authority is the entity that handles the Property Assessed Clean Energy financing program in MN, see more here: https://www.sppa.com/portfinancing/minnpace. After you have studied their website, contact someone at Winkelman Solar for more assistance.
  1. Traditional Financing: We have banks and other financial organizations that will finance solar based on strictly the energy benefits. Energy benefits include:
    1. Kilowatt (kWh) hours produced each year
    2. Demand charge reductions
    3. Solar Renewable Energy Credits
    4. Public relations value
  2. Owner Financing: The owner of any property planning to use solar can also invest in one of the above processes and receive a return on investment ranging up to 15 percent (IRR) annually
