Prairie Potato Company was formed in 1985 for the purpose of providing a refrigerated storage facility for the potatoes raised by two farms. It was formed as a partnership between Schlichting Farms, Inc. and Prairie Farm Company, Inc. These farms have been in the Schlichting family for four generations.
Prairie Potato Company is located in Benton County and stores about 800,000 cwt of fresh edible potatoes for about ten months of the year. The potatoes eventually go to processing plants in Minnesota and North Dakota to be made into French fries and other packaged potato products for the retail market. The potatoes are stored in refrigerated cellars until the processing plant has room and time to process them.
Our goal is to provide a quality edible potato product all year long by storing and preserving them naturally for use throughout the year. This requires large amounts of electricity and building capacities. We are accomplishing this in a more environmental way with the use of solar power.
